The Endangered Swan. One of the most iconic paintings from the grand masters' collection. Painted by the famous Jan Asselijn. Energetically, a swan defends her nest against a dog. The fight was interpreted politically in later centuries: the white swan was understood as the statesman Johan de Witt, murdered in 1672, defending the country against its enemies. With that interpretation, the painting entered the National Art Gallery as the first purchase in 1800.
