About ‘The Cardinal's favourite, Andrea Landini - late 19th century’

Andrea Landini (10 December 1847 - 1935) was an Italian painter.

He was born in Florence. He began his design studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence with Professor Riccardo Pasquini, and from there moved to the studio of Professor Antonio Ciseri. He also painted and exhibited in Paris. He was primarily a portrait painter, but also painted genre subjects. Among his most important genre works are: The Temptation and The Return. Among his many portraits, many life-size, are those of Signora Guerrazzi of Livorno; of contessa Lavinia Bocca; of Landini's sister; of the writer signora Elena Landini Ruffino; and finally a commissioned portrait of the Princess of Wales. Also noteworthy is the portrait of the Countess of Pralormo, and the portrait of the boy of the contessa Laparelli Pitti. Landini also painted still lifes of flowers.

The British Museum owns images of a number of paintings depicting persons in period attire and in elegant interiors, usually a cardinal, inside enjoying a meal or a drink, and animated or content with conversation or play with his pet dog.
