The Binnenhof is a complex of buildings in the centre of The Hague, which has been the centre of Dutch and Dutch politics for centuries. Its origins date back to the construction of a castle by the Counts of Holland, who held their residence there since the 13th century. They were later succeeded in this choice by stadholders and the States General of the Netherlands and those of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, respectively, who chose this location for its status as a centre of governance. The prime minister, the highest political administrator of the Netherlands, also has his office here, in the Torentje. The city of The Hague owes its origins to the Binnenhof, which over the centuries ensured an influx of administrators and workmen, who settled in the vicinity. The Binnenhof is listed among the Top 100 Dutch monuments and is possibly the oldest parliament building in Europe still serving as such. The word "Binnenhof" is often synonymous with national politics in Dutch parlance. The Buitenhof is an adjacent square, formerly also called "Nederhof".
