The Amstel seen from the Blauwbrug, Rembrandt van Rijn, ca. 1645 - ca. 1650.
pen and brown ink, with brush in brown ink, on parchment; framing lines in brown ink, h 132mm × b 231mm Catalogue entry
What is unusual about this landscape is that Rembrandt drew it on precious parchment. He depicted the view he had over the Amstel River in a southerly direction from the centre of the Blauwbrug. Towards the horizon he achieved a rarefied, atmospheric effect by only indicating the shapes there with fine pen lines and shading very lightly with a brush.
