The Côte d'Albâtre in Normandy is one of the most beautiful coasts in France. Between Ault in the north-east and the Seine estuary near Le Havre, the limestone plateau of the Pays de Caux on the Alabaster Coast, with its cliffs up to 110 metres high, breaks off into the English Channel like chalk.
Wind and waves have created fascinating rock formations: Cliffs and limestone needles, arches and bridges and other bizarre shapes. They shine in bright white between the blue sea and the green land. Mysterious - and incredibly dramatic during storms. Is there a more beautiful backdrop for a sunset?
Claude Monet once set up his easel next to the church in Varengeville-sur-Mer, where this photo was taken. His seamen's cemetery is still a magical place today. Situated high on a cliff on the alabaster coast, the sea cemetery harbours many famous graves. Georges Braque also found his eternal resting place there. From here, the view sweeps over lush green pastures and bright cliffs to the English Channel, whose tides constantly change their appearance in the light of the sun and the play of clouds.
