This photo was made in Haarlem.
The Adriaan was opened on May 19, 1779.
The windmill stands on the Spaarne river, at the time on the outskirts of the city.
The mill was built on the existing foundations of the former Goevrouwetoren.
The Goevrouwen tower was part of the old fortification around Haarlem.
Because the mill was built on top of the foundation of the tower, the mill was high and caught a lot of wind.
From 2003 there is a mill museum in Molen De Adriaan.
Visitors can learn about the technology, mills in general and De Adriaan in particular.
