Telegraph Road, a beautiful song from Dire Straits' album Love over Gold. On the way back from my trip through Death Valley towards my hotel in Los Angeles, I passed this spot. I just had to stop and take a picture.
I have a thing about the perspective of a road disappearing into the distance. It draws you into the picture as a viewer. The telephone poles on the left complete the picture for me. They add depth and enhance the sense of direction.
A light mist hangs in the valley-a kind of visual metaphor for the unknown. Sounds a bit philosophical perhaps, but in the end that is what life is often about: following a road without knowing exactly where it leads.
As I stood there, I heard a car approaching behind me in the distance. For me, the signal to move on again. To continue my way, literally and figuratively.
For this photo, I deliberately chose black-and-white. The lines, contrast and atmosphere come out better this way. It makes the image more powerful, and the emotion I felt at that moment emerges more strongly.
