A tawny owl sits delightfully in an old woodpecker hole on Velhorst. These are always lovely encounters with owls, you know they are there but you certainly don't see them every walk.
The tawny owl is the most common owl species in Europe. It inhabits all kinds of landscapes, ranging from deciduous and coniferous forests to urban parks and green housing estates. Due to its nocturnal lifestyle, it is not always noticed. The tawny owl breeds predominantly in tree cavities and starts nesting early in the year (February or March).
