Every five years, over 600 ships sail through the North Sea Canal to moor in and around the IJhaven. From 19 to 23 August 2015, SAIL will be organised for the ninth time.
The barque Europa has been sailing all over the world's seas since 1994 and has earned a reputation as a ship that really sails. A professional crew of 14 and up to 48 guest crew members of all ages and nationalities sail the ship. The Europa was built in Hamburg in 1911 under the name Senator Brockes. The ship was to be used as a lightship on the Elbe. Under the name ?Elbe 3? she served first as a lightship and later as a reserve ship. In 1986, the ship was brought to the Netherlands. In eight years, she was completely converted: the hold was comfortably fitted out and the ship was rigged as a Bark. Her length is 56 metres.
