About the artwork

Take-off Boeing B-52H Stratofortress bomber.

Registration: 61-0012.

The B-52 Stratofortress is an American long-range bomber. It can drop nuclear and conventional bombs and was built by Boeing. The aircraft dates back to the Cold War, the XB-52 first flew in 1952. The bomber was first used during the Vietnam War.

The B-52 will continue to operate well into this century, probably reaching 100 years of age. Thus, the old, smoking TF33 turbofan engines will be replaced by Rolls Royce F130 engines.

There were once 744 different B-52's flying in the US Air Force. About 70 B-52H's remain in service in 2023.

Because of its appearance and destructiveness, the aircraft was nicknamed BUFF which stands for Big Ugly Flying Fellow or Big Ugly Fat Fucker.

This photo was taken on 3 November 2014 at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.
