A colourful ode to perseverance and love of the sea. This edited photo shows surfers and beachgoers on a crisp, windy day, with looming clouds and frothy waves in the background. The wearer of the red and blue board - a modern-day hero - strides determinedly towards the surf with his son, while others watch or prepare for a dip in the cold water. Editing in Photoshop and Corel Painter X3 gives the image a painterly, almost dreamy feel, with vibrant colours and soft contours.

This photo tells the story of passion, freedom and the power of the moment - regardless of the weather.
