Wierum is a mound village that dates from the Middle Ages in the province of Friesland. The village lies against the Wadden Sea dike. On the mound is the Maria-church, built around 1200. The church originally stood in the middle of the village but due to the aforementioned storms, the church is situated at the edge of the village against the Zeedijk. The weather vane on the church tower, in the shape of a barge, reminds us of the fishing past of the village.
