The municipality of El Tanque is located in north-eastern Tenerife in the region of Icod-Daute-Isla Baja. It covers an area of 23.65 km2 and borders Santiago del Teide, Garachico and Los Silos. Its historic centre, especially the El Tanque Bajo area, possesses a rich architectural heritage from the 16th century. The village is thought to owe its name to a pond (estanque or tanque) that supplied Garachico with water.
Near it, the parish church of San Pedro de Daute was erected in the early 16th century, which later had to be rebuilt after a tongue of lava and fire destroyed it in 1706. Rural tourism has flourished in El Tanque in recent years. Indeed, nature and endemic species are plentiful. More than 60% of the territory consists of protected natural areas between 400 and 1354 metres high that are home to a very diverse fauna: amphibians, reptiles and birds of prey are some of the inhabitants of El Tanque's forest.
