The Canal Grande (Grand Canal) is the main canal in Venice in Italy. It is between 30 and 70 metres wide and about 5 metres deep. It is originally the course of an ancient river, possibly a branch of the Brenta, which snaked between the marshy islets on which Venice was later built. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the city's central waterway.
Along the Grand Canal are many palaces, such as the Ca' Dario, Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi, Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, Ca' Pesaro, Ca' d'Oro, Ca' Rezzonico and the Palazzo Vernier dei Leoni with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
