Sicily (Italian: Sicilia) is an island and autonomous region of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies southwest of the mainland Italian region of Calabria, and northeast of the North African country of Tunisia. The official Italian and Sicilian name is Sicilia. The Ancient Greek name Trinakria means "the island with the three points". This is also the name of its flag. The surface area of the island is 25,709 km². The island is up to 230 km long and 170 km wide. Its coastline is about 1,000 km. The autonomous region of Sicily also includes the Liparian or Aeolian Islands, the islet of Ustica, the Egadi Islands, the island of Pantelleria and the Pelagic Islands. The latter two lie off the coast of Tunisia and geologically belong to the African continent. The island state of Malta lies south of Sicily.
