About "Sunrise at the Mill of Sloten in Amsterdam"

About the artwork

The Mill of Sloten is a historic windmill located on the outskirts of Amsterdam, and it is one of the few remaining functional windmills within the city limits.

Dating back to 1847, the Molen van Sloten windmill was built to drain the surrounding polders. Polders are low-lying pieces of land reclaimed from the water and protected by dykes. The windmill played a crucial role in regulating water levels to prevent flooding.

Like many traditional Dutch windmills, the Mill of Sloten functioned as a pumping station. Its sails would catch the wind and drive a mechanical system that lifted water from lower areas, allowing it to be drained into higher channels or bodies of water.

In the 1990s, the Sloten Windmill underwent a thorough restoration to ensure its preservation and functionality. The restoration aimed to return the windmill to its original state, allowing visitors to experience its historical significance.

Today, the Sloten Windmill serves as both a museum and a visitor centre. Visitors can explore the interior of the windmill and learn more about the machinery and the role it played in the Dutch water management system. The surrounding area also offers a glimpse into the ancient Dutch landscape.

The windmill is located in the village of Sloten, one of Amsterdam's westernmost districts. Despite being within the city limits, Sloten has retained its historical charm and the Molen van Sloten is a remarkable landmark in the area.
