For several years I participated in The difference of 25 (https://difference25.blogspot.com), an initiative of Roos Kluvers. Every month she came up with a new theme and the 25 participants could draw, paint, sculpt, take pictures, whatever they wanted, based on this theme. We mailed our artworks to Roos and she made a collage of all the artworks at the end of the month. So we all worked with one and the same theme, but the artworks differed enormously: thus The Difference of 25.
Within this project, I made this collage with sunflower and self-created vase in March 2014. It was "Theme 27 Sunflowers". Rose wrote with it that many artists were inspired by these big flowers. And so it is! And I love them, too! Van Gogh, for example, made several paintings with sunflowers. He made a study of them, painted them lying on the ground and later as a bouquet in a vase. Van Gogh made four different paintings, but was satisfied with two of them. Later he painted 3 copies of these paintings. One of them hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
In my image, I follow Van Gogh's quirky hand by placing the sunflower in a skewed frame. The light on the sunflower and leaf is natural sunlight, from my photograph of the flower. The purple vase I painted digitally and is entirely fantasy, as are the flowers on it. One flower I let jump happily away from the vase.
