This frontal portrait depicts a woman leaning back relaxed in a green and white striped armchair. The composition is symmetrical, with the model at the centre of the frame and her body facing the viewer directly. Her eyes are closed, as if she were completely absorbed in the warmth of the midday sun. The painting exudes tranquillity, luxury and a subtle sensuality, without becoming excessive.
The style is expressive and clearly painted in thick impasto oil paint, with brushstrokes remaining visible and creating a great deal of texture. The striped armchair and the matching robe visually merge into one another, creating a strong graphic rhythm. This interplay of repetition gives the work a modern, almost fashionable look. The background in deep emerald green is rendered loosely and painterly with free brushstrokes, forming a beautiful contrast to the more structured lines of the chair and clothing.
The warm sunlight falls softly on the skin, bringing out shades of peach, ivory and gold. Together with accents of shadow black and dark green, this creates a refined and minimalist colour palette reminiscent of luxurious hotel cabanas on the Mediterranean or stylish resort portraits from contemporary art editorials.
The work evokes associations with the colourful portraits of David Hockney, the texture and intimacy of Jenny Saville’s painting technique, and the relaxed luxury of Slim Aarons’ photography, but translated into a contemporary painterly style. The result is a modern fine art portrait in which colour, light and texture come together in a powerful yet tranquil image.
