About "Study of trees and rocks"

by Dan Courtice

About the artwork

A photograph of trees and rock formations on the isle of Oléron, France. This was taken whilst walking along the beach one bright spring morning. An interesting rock formation caught my eye, then I saw tree roots sprouting out of the eroded surface. When I took the photo the final image I had in mind was of a sketch a geologist might've made, or a drawing made by I painter that would eventually become part of a painting. I decided to remove all colour which draws your attention to the different shapes and textures.

There is a texture added and techniques are used to give the photograph a painterly feel. The colours have been reduced slightly, adding a sense of age. Using my technique I am able to play with light and contrast, softening certain areas and strengthening others, which enables me to draw the viewers eye to a specific part of the image, very much like a painter would do. I aim to produce images that evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, and my subjects are almost always trees.
