Colorful dilapidated street with stairs, paved with bricks, somewhere in the Tuscan fortified town of Pitigliano.
I personally like the way the colors of the doors are reflected in the moss and algae on the stones, so that was the first reason to take this picture.
Besides, the interesting thing about this kind of ancient construction is that you see so many differences in masonry and stones used - constantly building on and repairing older work.
The consistent use of tuff from the immediate surroundings for the walls is also nice because this soft porous stone becomes rougher with time, so that you can also see the age of the walls from that.
The end result is a colorful photograph with a fine palette of shapes and textures that does not easily become boring.
The photo has all the outward stylistic features of Urbex (Urban Exploration), but in practice this is not a hidden and deserted place, but an alleyway used daily by its residents. Even the spaces behind the weathered doors are still in use for storage.
Pitigliano is a beautiful village in the province of Grosseto in the southwestern part of the Tuscany region. When you arrive at the village you immediately know why it is among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The impressive city wall dates from the sixteenth century. Because of the location of the village and the special shape of the city walls Pitigliano looks most like an ancient fortress.
