About "Stoney weir in Amersfoort"

by Jan van der Knaap

About the artwork

This is the Stoney weir in the Flierbeeksingel in Amersfoort. It is located right next to the medieval Koppelpoort. A weir or lock is a hydraulic work to regulate the water level in a river. This weir is of a type developed by the English engineer Francis Stoney (1837-1897). By adjusting two slides in the height, the water level could also be adjusted in height. You can see two wheels left and right. The weir was built in 1910. The architect is W. Chr. Jansen. The two slides and the mechanism were replaced around 1980 during a renovation. The photo was taken on 13 January 2020. Notice the Christmas tree on the left that has been squashed into the water before and is now pressed against the slide by the current.

This photo belongs to the series Modern History and is therefore developed in black and white .
