Adriaen Coorte, Still life with woodland strawberries, 1705
This small still life is a marvel of simplicity. Some strawberries lie on a stone tabletop in front of a dark background. A sprig hangs over the edge, a white flower protrudes from the fruit. Dots of white paint indicate the seeds of the red strawberries.
We know little more about Adriaen Coorte than that he probably lived in Middelburg. For a long time he was unknown, until he was rediscovered in the second half of the 20th and became a much-loved painter.
