Rachel Ruysch was the daughter of botany professor Frederik Ruysch. Her painting talent was recognised early on and she developed into a famous painter of flower still lifes. Her work was admired in the courts of The Hague and Germany, and the Elector of the Palatinate, a German principality, appointed her court painter.
