The Hanseatic town of Stendal is the county town of the district of Stendal and, with a population of around 38,000, is the largest town and transport hub in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt. There are many impressive buildings from the brick Gothic period in the town. These architectural monuments are a reminder of the former wealth and importance of the old Hanseatic city.
The Altmark is a region in the north of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The historic cultural landscape borders the Magdeburger Börde to the south and the Wendland to the north. As one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Germany, the Altmark consists of agricultural, but also natural lowlands with forests and heathland such as the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide.
