Steel rhythm, steel railway bridge over the Moselle by Arjan Warmerdam

Steel Rhythm – Bullay Double-Deck Bridge

On the Moselle, between Bullay and Alf, lies one of the region’s most remarkable bridges: the Bullay Double-Deck Bridge. An impressive steel truss bridge where rail and road traffic literally travel one above the other.

This photograph was taken from the lower level of the bridge. Here, traffic flows between the heavy steel columns and diagonal braces, whilst the railway line runs directly above. This vantage point creates an almost endless rhythm of steel, rivets, light and shadow. The lines of the road surface and the repetition of the structure draw the eye ever further into the bridge.

It is precisely the combination of engineering and age that makes this place so special. The steel clearly bears the marks of many years of use: dark patches, rust-brown hues and weathered surfaces give each girder its own character. The soft light and muted colours of the surroundings enhance the industrial feel without making the image appear harsh.

The small car further along the bridge provides a sense of scale for the enormous structure and emphasises just how much steel surrounds the road user. At the same time, it forms a subtle focal point within the interplay of lines. For me, this photograph is primarily about rhythm, depth and structure. A functional structure which, when viewed from a different angle, transforms into a graphic interplay of lines and shapes.

An atmospheric wall art piece for lovers of bridges, architecture, industrial photography and the Moselle region. Thanks to its calm blue-grey and rust-brown tones, the image fits particularly well into a modern, industrial or minimalist interior.
