In the nocturnal silence of Rotterdam, De Hef rises like a monument of steel and history. Officially known as the Koningshavenbrug, this iconic railway bridge has been a striking silhouette along the Meuse since 1927. When the city settles down and the lighting emphasises the industrial framework, De Hef transforms into an almost sculptural appearance: raw, powerful and timeless. The bridge was built in response to growing port activities and was a technical masterpiece at the time. Its impressive lifting mechanism allowed seagoing vessels to enter the Koningshaven unhindered, while train traffic continued as soon as the bridge section was lowered again. Although De Hef has been out of use for rail traffic since 1993, the structure has been preserved as industrial heritage – a conscious choice by the city to keep its past visible. Light plays a key role in this photograph. The artificial lighting accentuates the geometry of the steel and exposes the complex construction against the deep, dark sky. The water of the Meuse subtly reflects the lights of the city, creating a calm counterbalance to the massive power of the bridge. In the distance, the modern skyline of Rotterdam glows, further enhancing the contrast between old and new. This night-time photograph of De Hef is more than a cityscape; it is an ode to Rotterdam itself. To a city that is constantly renewing itself, yet cherishes its industrial roots. A powerful work of art that fits perfectly into a modern interior, an office space or an environment where architecture, history and urban photography come together.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
