About ‘St James' Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber’ by Rüdiger Lutz

In this black-and-white photograph, I have captured a view across the rooftops of Rothenburg ob der Tauber towards St. James’s Church. The church rises clearly above the historic old town, whilst in the foreground old tiled roofs, half-timbered details and a light-coloured canopy of trees bring the scene to life. The view does not look like a classic postcard image, but rather like a quiet moment above the town’s narrow streets.

What fascinates me about this motif is the interplay of proximity and distance. The roofs in the foreground appear tangible and rich in detail, whilst St. James’ Church in the background exudes tranquillity, history and permanence. The black-and-white treatment makes the forms stand out more clearly: the lines of the roof ridges, the texture of the old tiles, the tall church windows and the tower as a fixed focal point.

Upon closer inspection, one discovers small elements that lend the image its character: the irregular roof surfaces, light-coloured branches between the houses, chimneys and shadows on the walls. This work is particularly well-suited to spaces intended to convey historic architecture, clear contrasts and a calm, timeless atmosphere.
