Spring Kisses the Earth (1894), Alexander Frenz Alexander Frenz, who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, often took up fantastical and mythological themes. Here he depicts the beginning of springtime. A female figure, symbolising the earth, is kissed awake by spring, the young man above her. The bodies, turned fondly towards each other, and the tender touch of their hands, reveal an intimate bond between man and woman as well as, metaphorically, the interplay of seasons.
