Solar Disc Mandala with Square Spirals

by Skye Studio

A large black disc with a small open centre sits inside a thin circular frame, like a sun, eclipse or ring seen from above. Around it, a pale band holds two kinds of ornament that alternate with careful regularity. At the top, bottom, left and right, tapered square spirals wind inward in nested black lines, each ending in a tiny solid square. Between them, at the four diagonals, pairs of curved, leaf-like wedges meet at their points and fan outward, a little like petals or crescent moons.

The design is entirely black on a light ground, and the contrast between the heavy central mass and the delicate line work gives it a steady, ceremonial feel. The angular spirals recall Greek key borders and ancient geometric ornament, while the circular layout suggests a sun wheel or a calendar-like dial, though these are only visual echoes. It sits comfortably between mandala, emblem and pattern, with a sense of order that feels both archaic and modern.

Its fourfold rhythm and strong silhouette make it easy to read from a distance, yet the small details reward a closer look. It could appeal to anyone who enjoys symbolic geometry, bold monochrome graphics, or designs that feel like a discovered artifact.
