The insulation provided by the plumage of the snowy owl is extraordinarily developed. To begin with, this bird is almost entirely feathered. Its beak is short and only the tip protrudes. The eyes are protected by long dense eyelashes. The legs are wrapped in long feathery 'pants', which extend to the claws. Underneath the tightly fitted layer of feathers, the animal wears warm 'underwear' of fine down. Finally, the structure of the feathers also contributes to their insulation: the core of the feathers is hollow so they can store warm air.
