Skating poster Vijftien tochten, Frisian ice

by Sidney van den Boogaard

Fifteen times since 1901 the Frisian ice was thick enough for the race along the eleven towns. This skating poster puts every one of those races, from 1909 to 1997, on a single fifteen-hour dial: each ring is a winning time, from Hoekstra's 13:50 to Angenent's 6:49, and the further a ring turns, the longer the day on the ice. The rose arcs are the women's winners from 1985 on, the dotted ring of 1956 the race without a winner; at the heart sits the distance, 200 kilometres. Around the dial runs a halo of 126 ticks, one per winter, their length the number of ice days; the hardest winter counts 48, and the orange ticks are the winters with a race. For anyone who grew up on natural ice and still hopes every time it freezes.

This work is part of the Roll of Honour collection: sports history as a data print. Each print takes one sport and turns its whole roll of honour, from the first edition to today, into one graphic image, every name and number cross-checked against two independent sources.

Independent work, not affiliated with or endorsed by any league, federation, team or athlete; the data comes from Wikipedia and other public sources. A great gift for the fan who knows their sport's results by heart, for the living room, the study or the clubhouse.
