Six guards of the cloths, Pieter Pietersz. (I), 1599 oil on panel, h 108cm × b 143cm. More object data Waardijns were the overseers and administrators of the cloth guild. Their duties included inspecting the fabrics, determining the types of wool and the manner of weaving and dyeing. Pieter Pietersz's group portrait is still very much in the 16th-century tradition of static militia paintings, but the many hand gestures he used gave this somewhat stiff composition a certain liveliness.
