Delacroix drew and painted this model several times between 1817 and 1824. The square seat, the (unpainted) support for the raised arm and the surrounding neutral darkness show that it is a study of this nude model in itself. Unimpressed by the clichés of antiquity, Delacroix examined the physical appearance of this woman, paying particular attention to the mother-of-pearl lustre of her skin.
The girl is completely naked with her legs crossed and hips, belly, torso and breasts exposed.
Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix (Charenton-Saint Maurice, France, April 26, 1798 - Paris, August 13, 1863) is considered the most important French painter of Romanticism (which is why he is sometimes called "Le prince des romantiques"). He is also called a "literary painter".
