About ‘Silhouette of a Woman’ by Dirk Lahuis

The front room is enveloped in the soft, amber atmosphere of a single light bulb, which gives the space a fragile intimacy. The interior tells a story of grandeur and history; the warm brown parquet floor exudes a lived-in class, and high on the ceiling, a delicate plaster ornament attracts attention. Where a rich chandelier once flaunted, a modest light now reigns, making shadows dance on the walls.

Through the narrow opening between the heavy, handmade sliding doors, the eye is irresistibly drawn inside. There, framed by the dark wood, emerges the beautiful silhouette of a slender woman. She is frozen in a fluid motion, just as she strips off her last garment. The fabric slides off her body, allowing her forms to merge with the warm glow of the room.

Without being aware of it, she makes the viewer part of this strictly personal evening ritual. We are unwittingly drawn into her nudity, not as intruders, but as silent witnesses to a moment of pure beauty. The atmosphere is charged with a respectful tension; it is honest and romantic, but the knowledge that this image should really have remained hidden makes it undeniably exciting.

Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
