Silence in Black by Color Square

The work depicts a stylised female portrait with an impressive, almost perfectly round head of hair that completely dominates the composition. The deep black hair forms, as it were, a large circle around the face and creates a powerful silhouette. Only a narrow, warm-toned face remains visible. One closed eye is indicated by a minimal black line, whilst the nose and mouth have been omitted entirely. It is precisely this simplicity that gives the woman a calm, self-assured and somewhat mysterious air. The enormous afro contrasts sharply with the understated background in beige and muted olive green. On closer inspection, one can see that the black area is not uniform: fine brushstrokes, transparent patches and underlying textures give the hair an almost velvety depth. The edge has been deliberately left irregular, allowing the large geometric shape to retain a hint of organic quality.
A striking detail is the round terracotta-coloured earring, which hangs beside the imposing head of hair like a small graphic counterpoint. At the bottom, a second intriguing contrast emerges. Warm tones of ochre and rusty orange meet a black garment featuring long, undulating beige panels.
The work combines minimalist portraiture with retro and graphic influences. The limited facial detail makes the image universal, whilst the distinctive hairstyle, the earring and the warm, earthy colour palette add a great deal of personality. A decorative and powerful portrait in which simplicity takes centre stage.
