After having painted a highly unusual self-portrait around 1628 with his face in the shade (elsewhere in this room), Rembrandt tried the same approach in his etchings. That didn't turn out to be so easy. At first he was unable to keep the details recognisable in the shadow. It wasn't until a new attempt in 1633 (in the middle) that we succeeded.
