Around 1440, the first lord of Schagen had a then already existing stone house rebuilt into a square moated castle, Schagen Castle. In 1676, it was sold to Floris Carel van Beijeren van Schagen. However, he lived on a castle in Belgium. Schagen castle sits empty for a few centuries, falling into ruin.
At the tail end of the 21st century, the plan to rebuild the Castle on the original 'Sloteiland' takes shape. Not as a replica of the original castle, but as a new castle building in the style matching the remaining castle towers.
