Sand is a soft, hard, loose and granular material and one of the most common natural substances on earth. Sand consists of very small pieces of stone, sand grains, which vary in size between 63 micrometres and 2 millimetres. If the grains are smaller than 63 micrometres, the type of soil is called silt; for grains larger than 2 millimetres, it is called gravel.[1]
Sand usually occurs as sediment, meaning that the sand has been transported by water or wind. This is how dunes, beaches, deserts and riverbeds were created from sand. The grains are usually decomposing material of rocks, but can also be of organic origin (shells, coral). source wikipedia.
