A lighthouse or light tower is a tower that was built near cliffs, or directly on them, straits, entrances to estuaries and harbors to warn ships of the cliffs or passage at night and in stormy weather, originally by means of an open flame and later by means of mirrors, lenses and a lamp.
Harbours or harbour channels also sometimes have one or more lighthouses indicating access and often forming a line of light.
Along the Dutch coast, there are eleven large lighthouses (known as A-posts) and four smaller ones (known as B-posts). In addition, there are five lighthouses on the shores of the IJsselmeer.
