About the artwork
The photo was taken in Erg Admer, a desert area in southern Algeria. The photo shows a sand dune in the soft light of the setting sun. The image is simple and abstract. Much of the dune is in shadow, making the sand texture appear darker and smooth. Only a small section catches the warm sunlight. At that point, the sand takes on a lighter colour and the fine lines of the surface become visible.
The transition from light to dark forms a natural dividing line that divides the image into two planes. There are no traces of movement or life, just sand, light and shadow. The soft shapes of the dune give the sculpture a sense of peace and tranquillity.
It is a photograph that shows how the Sahara is not only a vast, dry landscape, but also a place full of subtle shades and shapes. Here, the dune in Erg Admer becomes a study of light and texture, in which the sand itself becomes the subject. An abstract portrait of the desert, captured in simplicity.
