Salt pans at Maras in the sacred valley, Peru. The salt pans are about 3 meters in diameter and 30 cm. deep. They're from the pre-Inca era. The village of Maras is located in the Cuzco region of Peru, 40 km from the city of Cuzco. It is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The local tourist attractions are the salt mines, where salt is extracted. Since the Inca time, this place has been used to extract salt. There are terraces built, through which water runs. This water comes from the mountains and contains salt. Because of the effect of the sun, the water disappears and the salt remains.
