Sail Amsterdam is a 5-yearly, multi-day maritime event in Amsterdam. It is rigged around an armada of monumental sea sailing ships, which, after a parade through the North Sea Canal, moor for several days along the quays of the IJ and in the main IJ ports.
The event was first held in August 1975 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam, in a way emulating the First Dutch Maritime Exhibition held in 1913 in Amsterdam, where people could also visit the ships on display. The idea was that this would allow people to focus attention on the port and the city, and sea sailing ships were invited from all over the world for the event 'Sail Amsterdam 700'.
