On an early morning when Sahara sand was predicted, I stood on the dike of Wierum in the province of Friesland. The result was a beautifully coloured sky.
The Reformed Maria Church was built around 1200 and stands on a mound at the edge of the dike on the Wadden Sea in the former fishing village of Wierum. The church tower is a national monument.
Wierum originated on a wide mound in the early Middle Ages. Traditionally, Wierum was a fishing village. Until the 19th century, fishing was an important source of income. On 1 December 1893, 13 out of 17 fishing boats sank during a heavy snowstorm. In the process, 22 fishermen lost their lives. A fishing monument near the seawall commemorates this event.
