Cloudy bulges and blades of grass, oily patches, what are you looking at? You see a ditch with water and at the bottom what is known as primal, also called iron ore. Primeval tar is created by seepage. Seepage is groundwater coming to the surface and is created by higher water pressure (hydrostatic pressure) in deeper, sandy soil layers. The rusty brown colour occurs after oxidation of iron present in groundwater. The oily stains are caused by iron bacteria in the seepage water. It is not a result of soil pollution.
Long story short: nature produces a beautiful abstract image here. I took this photo in the Onlanden, a water storage area in the north of Drenthe.
