About the artwork

The oldest parts of this famous organ date back to before 1450. In 1542 the organ was rebuilt in renaissance style by an unknown organ builder. After that several organ builders worked on the instrument. In 1691-1692 the foundation for the current organ was laid by the well-known organ builder Arp Schnitger. He restored the organ and enlarged it with the characteristic pedal towers. The Backwerk was added in the period 1728-1730 by F.C. Schnitger and A.A. Hinsz. Later the organ builders Lohman, van Oeckelen and Doornbos worked on the organ and several stops were changed to reflect the changing musical tastes of the time. In 1939 a large restoration took place by the firm de Koff, who made the action electric. The new console was placed on a gallery in the nave of the church. J. Ahrend carried out an extensive restoration in the period 1977-1984, during which the mechanical action was restored. The organ has 53 stops, divided over Hoofdwerk, Rugwerk, Bovenwerk and Pedaal. The instrument is located at the back of the church on a large balcony.
