Panorama of the Rijnhaven in Rotterdam. The Rijnhaven is one of the oldest harbours on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas river. Its construction lasted from 1887 to 1895. Its surface area is 28 ha. It was initially dug as a storage harbour for Rhine vessels, mainly in winter when the seagoing ships had to unload their cargoes and the Rhine vessels could not sail up the Rhine due to the freezing of the upper rivers. In the meantime, the harbour lost its transhipment function, and became mainly a berth for inland vessels. Today, the Rijnhaven is closed to inland navigation.
