This iconic old railroad bridge is a national monument and a household name for every Rotterdammer. It is a lasting reminder of times gone by. The bridge owes its nickname to the lifting mechanism used to lift the railroad section that lies between the banks of the Koningshaven when a ship had to enter or exit the harbor. The original name is: Koningshavenbrug. The bridge dates back to 1927 and served until 1993. Then the bridge was replaced by a railroad tunnel. The architect of the bridge was Pieter Joosting.
This night shot shows the beautifully lit bridge in all its glory.
The raw beauty of this bridge constructed with lots of rivets makes every heart of a true Rotterdammer beat faster.
The fact that this bridge was never demolished makes it possible to see a nice contrast
Rotterdam with the Erasmus Bridge and the Willems Bridge, which are also architectural highlights.
