This iconic old railway bridge is a national monument and a household name for every Rotterdam inhabitant. It is a permanent reminder of times past. The bridge owes its nickname to the lifting mechanism, with which the railway part between the banks of the Koningshaven was hoisted when a ship had to enter or exit the port. The original name is: Koningshavenbrug. The bridge dates from 1927 and served until 1993. Then the bridge was replaced by a railway tunnel. The architect of the bridge was Pieter Joosting.
