"? Rope: the silent force behind maritime history! ?⚓️
From the ancient Egyptians, who made ropes from water reeds, to the use of manila hemp in the 19th century-rope has always played a crucial role in shipping. Did you know that sailors in the Middle Ages used long 'ropewalks' to make ropes of up to 300 metres? These ropes were essential for hoisting sails and securing ships. A warship of the 19th century sometimes carried up to 70 kilometres of rope, with a total weight of more than 78 tonnes! Nowadays, synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester are used, but the tradition lives on. ?️ #MaritimeHistory #Shipping #RopeTraditions"
