Rogan Art is a rare and fascinating form of handicraft, originating in the Kutch region of the Indian state of Gujarat. This centuries-old technique involves painting on fabric using a thick paste made from boiled castor oil and natural pigments. Traditionally practised by the Khatri Muslim community, this art has been passed down from generation to generation.
Rogan Art motifs are often inspired by nature, depicting trees, flowers and peacocks with incredible finesse. One of the special features of this technique is the use of a metal needle to stretch and shape the paint, resulting in works of impressive detail.
Once used to decorate wedding garments and royal textiles, Rogan Art almost disappeared before being revitalised through conservation efforts. Today, it is recognised worldwide, and even exhibited in prestigious galleries. This living tradition is a testament to India's rich craft heritage.
